About this trip

In February, the Serengeti comes alive with one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles: the Great Migration. Thousands of wildebeest give birth on the southern plains, drawing predators and unforgettable wildlife drama — not always pretty, but endlessly fascinating.

Over 8 days you’ll move through Arusha’s forested foothills, the elephant-rich valleys of Tarangire, the endless Serengeti savannah at the height of the migration, and the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro Crater. Flamingos color the lakes, giraffes drift across the horizon, and lions patrol the grasslands — every night falling asleep to the sounds of the wild. This is Tanzania at its most epic: raw, beautiful and completely unforgettable, with plant-based food at every stop.

Highlights
  • Arusha National Park — misty Ngurdoto Crater, flamingo-fringed Momela Lakes and canopy colobus monkeys
  • Tarangire National Park — vast elephant herds beneath ancient baobab trees
  • Two full days in the Serengeti at the height of the Great Migration
  • A full day inside Ngorongoro Crater with a real shot at all of the Big Five
  • Every included meal is plant-based — from the welcome dinner in Arusha to picnic lunches on the crater floor

Welcome to Arusha

Saturday, February 13

Arrive anytime today — we’ll transfer you to our hotel to unwind after the journey. Arusha is a vibrant city in northern Tanzania, often called the “Gateway to Safari Country” for its position near many of the country’s most famous parks. There’s plenty to fill an afternoon here too: a coffee plantation tour, waterfall visits, or a browse through handicrafts made by local Maasai artisans. Tonight, we gather for a welcome dinner.

Arusha National Park

Sunday, February 14

Wake to a hearty breakfast before a short drive to Arusha National Park, a compact gem just 40 minutes from town. Beneath the montane forest canopy, blue monkeys swing overhead and flashes of turaco and trogon catch your eye — keep watch for the rare black-and-white colobus monkey, easily spotted here.

The day winds through the misty Ngurdoto Crater, where buffalo graze the marshy floor, then continues north to the Momela Lakes, each shimmering in shades of green and blue and often fringed with flamingos. Giraffes drift across the grassy slopes, zebras graze in tight bands, and tiny dik-dik dart for cover. By late afternoon, return to your lodge for dinner and a night’s rest.

Tarangire National Park

Monday, February 15

After breakfast, journey two hours south to Tarangire, a park known for vast elephant herds and its iconic, towering baobab trees. The Tarangire River winds through the valley — a lifeline that draws wildlife year-round. On today’s game drive, look for lions lounging in the shade, flocks of dazzling birds, and elephant families moving across the plains. As the sun dips, settle into your lodge for dinner under the stars.

Toward the Serengeti, via Ngorongoro

Tuesday, February 16

The road to the Serengeti winds along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, offering glimpses of wildlife before the plains even open up. By late morning, the savannah stretches endlessly — golden grasses alive with wildebeest, zebra and giraffe. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Naabi Hill, where rock hyrax and the park’s famous pink-headed agama lizards bask on sun-warmed kopjes. Continue deeper into the Serengeti on a leisurely game drive before reaching your tented lodge, where you’ll drift to sleep to the distant calls of hyena and zebra.

Serengeti — the Great Migration

Wednesday, February 17

Wake to the sounds of the wild — perhaps a lion’s roar or the chatter of monkeys nearby. Today you’ll explore the Serengeti in depth and witness the Great Migration itself: hippos wallow in pools, giraffes browse from acacia trees, and crocodiles lie in wait along the riverbanks. After an exhilarating day, return to the tented lodge for a relaxed dinner.

Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater rim

Thursday, February 18

Enjoy one last Serengeti game drive before heading east toward Ngorongoro. The transition from wide-open plains to dramatic highlands is striking. Pause for a picnic lunch en route, then continue to your lodge perched on the crater’s rim. As the sun sets, soak in views over the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera — a stage for Africa’s densest concentration of wildlife.

Into Ngorongoro Crater

Friday, February 19

Rise early and descend 600 meters into the crater, a wildlife sanctuary unlike any other. Here, there’s a real chance of spotting all of the “Big Five” — lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo — in a single day, alongside flocks of storks and cranes and hippos wallowing in freshwater pools. After a picnic lunch beside a lake, ascend the crater walls and begin the drive back to Arusha, arriving by evening.
